The best of Kurt Carr’s choir selections

Kurt Carr has certainly made his mark in the realm of gospel music. His songs are sung by groups and choirs worldwide.

These are my picks of the very best choir songs done by the Kurt Carr Singers. If you’re a choir director, your choir should learn these.

(Of course, these are just MY picks for the songs that I think are the best. You’re free to disagree with me.)

Grateful for the things You’ve done for me”Tempo: Slow

Great harmonies and a lot of emotion. This one has that classic “Yes, Yes, Yes” chorus in the middle that’s so common in COGIC songs.

“We lift our hands in the sanctuary
We lift our hands to give you the glory
We lift our hands to give you the praise
And we will praise you for the rest of our days”

A big favorite of a lot of choirs and groups. Joyous and fun, it’s a song that the congregation can really get into.

Tempo: Moderately fast

Key: Db, D, Eb, F, Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, then C! (by the end the singers are going VERY high; you probably won’t want to go as high with your choir as they do)

  • For singers: 3 / 5, if you limit the number of key changes
  • For musicians: 3 / 5

Lead singer required? No

Oh My Soul Loves Jesus

“Oh my soul loves Jesus
Oh my soul loves Jesus
Words don’t convey what my heart wants to say
Oh, Oh my soul loves Jesus”

A beautiful and touching love song to the Lord. My favorite part is when the sing a chorus of the hymn “Jesus, the Son of God” as the bridge.

This song is only available on the “Awesome Wonder” album, not as a single.

Tempo: Slow
Key: A

Difficulty level:

  • For singers: 3.5 / 5
  • For musicians: 4 / 5

Psalm 150/Let Everything that Has Breath Praise

(it’s actually two songs, but they go together)

Bless this House

Buy Psalm 150

Buy Let Everything that Has Breath Praise

These are from Kurt Carr’s 2013 album, “Bless This House”.

Psalm 150 is a dramatic prelude with 4-part harmony and a classical feel.  It then transitions into the energetic and uplifting Let Everything that Has Breath Praise.  Together, they would make an excellent choice for opening a concert.

Tempo: The first part is slow, the second part is fast
Key: Cm, then Dm

Difficulty level:

  • For singers: 4.5/5
  • For musicians: 4.5/5

Lead singer required?  It’s a spoken word lead.  I think the piece would be a little empty without it.
